Devvarman destroyed by Benneteau
French star Julien Benneteau, a wily performer on grass, earned a quarter-final place after a 154 minute three set success over Somdev Devvarman. The Indian no1 (left), who accounted for 2010 Eastbourne runner-up Guillermo Garcia-Lopez,
was impeccable in the opening set until Benneteau ran away 7-1 in the
tie-break. The second set was also a close encounter and predictably
was decided by another tie-break, this time Devvarman knew exactly what
to do and forced a third set courtesy of an 8-6 triumph. With the
weather veering towards rain and severely overcast Benneteau upped the
pace to and showed his experience and quality of serve to reel off a
6-3 success. 15 June 2011
Top seed Tsonga tumbles out
Wily Czech star Radek Stepanek became the latest ace to scatter a seed by taking out lacklustre Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
(left) 6-2 6-3. The French ace looked a shadow of the player who raced
to the final at Queen's last week and said: "I'm contracted, I'm
feeling healthy and not feeling any pain so I have to play here. For a
couple of months I haven't had any problem with my back and that's why
I think I can dive!" But top seed Tsonga dived right of the event
despite being the overwhelming favourite, struggling to find his
momentum that was probably down to minimal on-site preparation at
Devonshire Park.15 June 2011
Tipsarevic tears past Ward
Seeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic (left) saw off James Ward
6-3 4-6 6-2 after waltzing the third and decisive set on Court no1.
Poor light halted yesterday's play at one
set a-piece and the two grass court
experts were expected to battle it out, but very blustery conditions
ended a classic encounter and Ward wilted once he fell behind and
dropped his serve. Tipsarevic tore towards the net at every opportunity
and polished off the battling Brit with aplomb courtesy of power strokes and exceptional volleying skills.15 June 2011
Kunitsyn keen to impress
Russian qualifier Igor Kunitsyn had his work cut out against lucky loser Illya Marchenko
but sealed success in a topsy-turvy contest to earn a quarter-final
place. Kunitsyn got off to a solid start and seemed to be in total
control by taking the opening set 6-3. But Ukraine ace Marchenko, whose
game is ideally suited to grass, shifted through the gears and changed
tactics to cruise to a 6-1 second set. Kunitsyn weathered the storm and
also altered his game plan to rush the net at every chance and claim a
deserved 6-3 1-6 6-2 victory.15 June 2011
Determined Dimitrov in driving seat
Bulgarian ace Grigor Dimitrov (left) battled past South African no1 Kevin Anderson
6-3 6-2 on Court 4, watched by only a handful of fans. Anderson, who
relies on his 6'7" frame to deliver penetrating serves, found the
squashed court conditions more difficult to cope with than the blustery
conditions. Determined Dimitrov was in spectacular form, chasing all
over the court to return shots with real venom and earn a deserved
place in the quarter-finals .15 June 2011
Dark horse Seppi is riding high
Italian Andreas Seppi (left) triumphed over controversial but talented American ace Donald Young
in straight sets 7-6 6-3 to ease into the quarter-finals. The opening
set on Court 2 was affected by the windy conditions with neither player
giving an inch, especially on their serve, in a contest of few rallies.
Seppi lifted his game on the resultant tie-break 7-1 and was never in
danger during the tight second set as Young's footwork on grass let the
youngster down.15 June 2011
What to expect at Eastbourne today
No3 seed Janko Tipsarevic (left) set to complete his thrilling contest against battling Brit James Ward
for a third and decisive set. Poor light halted yesterday's play at one
set a-piece and fireworks are expected from the two grass court
experts. French ace Jo-Wilfried Tsonga returns to Centre Court where he faces Czech ace Radek Stepanek and a quarter-final berth at stake against the winner of today's tie between Kei Nishikori and veteran qualifier Rainer Schuettler of Germany.15 June 2011

French flair's final flurry
AEGON International final, Eastbourne | 19 June 2010
Mauresmo gives Llodra lift to title
French ace Michael Llodra was crowned 2010 Eastbourne champion after brushing aside Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in their baseline battle, following vital tactical advice from compatriot and ex-Wimbledon winner Amelie Mauresmo.
Veteran Llodra hit 11 aces to dismiss the Spaniard in the rain-interrupted final to win 7-5, 6-2 in quickfire 67 minutes and earn his second title of the season.
World no46 Llodra (left), who
had hit 50 aces at the tournament to reach the final showdown, had few
problems with his magnificent serve to hold all 10 service games
against Garcia-Lopez.The opening set was a tight cat-and-mouse contest, with Llodra securing the only serve break in the 11th game for a deserved 6-5 lead and nine aces.
Left-hander Llodra was constantly getting caught out by Garcia-Lopez's powerful passing shots, so had to abandon his usually reliable serve and volley tactics.
The
30-year-old served out the set to edge ahead without facing a single
break point, and held Garcia-Lopez (right) to just two points on the return in
the first set.
When rain briefly interrupted play during the third game of the second set, the Centre Court crowd were feeling the cold and hoping for a ray of sunshine to break through. But the only brightness was Llodra's much improved game after the short delay. After further advice from on-watching short-term coach Mauresmo, Llodra lifted his game to move up a gear and outplay his clay court expert opponent.
The Spanish world no41's costly double fault gave Llodra the lead but then the French ace made a meal out of completing the rout.
Llodra had to save two break points, the only ones he face in the final, and was cagey in breaking Garcia-Lopez's serve in the eighth game of the second set to capture the title. This was Llodra's fifth career title and his second on grass after triumphing at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2004.
Llodra said: "I know I can play well on grass, but you still have to do the job out there on the court. It's always a pleasure to win a title, it doesn't happen every week so you have to enjoy it when it happens.
"It's been a great week and I felt good right from the beginning. At 6-5 in the first set it was a great time to break and I knew that if I stayed focused I would get my chances. Then it helped to serve first in the second set.”
"When I came here I had a good sensation and it was a very good week, it's been really nice. I've been working with Amelie [Mauresmo] for two weeks now, we discuss a lot my game outside the court so I now feel more comfortable. I know the job I have to do, I can win or I can lose but I feel very relaxed, so I have to say a big thank you to Amelie."
I know I can play well on grass, but you still have to do a job out there on the surface
